Apply to our Effective Altruism Fellowship

  • How can we use our time or money to best help others?

  • How can we tackle some of the world’s most pressing problems, including ending global poverty and factory farming, mitigating technological risks, preventing future pandemics, and stopping climate change?

  • How can we find fulfilling and impactful careers?

The Effective Altruism Fellowship is a 2-month program that engages with these questions and explores the core concepts and ideas within the effective altruism community. There will be 8 in-person sessions from the end of September through the end of November on Wednesday evenings.

You will be able to learn through workshops, discussions, and talks by guest speakers. And of course, by meeting other people with an interest in these topics.

To celebrate your hard work, we will have a final graduation dinner. We hope the fellowship will provide you with a framework for figuring out how you can make a difference in the world.

Applications will close on Sunday, September 15th. The application is not very selective, but please take about 30 minutes for it. If you have any doubts or questions, don’t hesitate to email us here: info@thehagueea.org

See the schedule below!

Want to be an Effective Altruist?

  • We welcome everyone to our community! We just ask that you are willing to invest some time and attention into learning about EA with us, or are applying core principles to your own life.

  • Our recommended introduction to EA is a fellowship: a multi-week program with engaging readings and discussions. We offer our own THEA fellowship twice per year, and Centre for EA offers a virtual edition more regularly. Read more below!

  • If you are unsure about a fellowship, we still urge you to be brave and apply! But, if that’s not an option, you can learn by yourself, too. Find out how here. To then join THEA, just reach out to us!

And you can join our Whatsapp announcements chat for when we organize events that are open to newcomers.

Apply to an online Effective Altruism program

If the schedule for our fellowship does not work for you, you can apply for two similar online programs: the EA Netherlands introductory programme and the international EA virtual programs. The set-up is a bit different from our normal fellowship: there’s still the readings and discussions about the concepts, but the THEA fellowship is in a larger group and has inspiring speakers sharing their views.

A new online program starts every couple of weeks, so you can apply right now. If you plan to complete one of these fellowships, let us know via info@thehagueea.org and upon completion you will be an official member of THEA.

What happens after I graduate from the fellowship?

You become a member of THEA! We provide many opportunities for our members to stay engaged in our community, including:

  • Monthly dinners (we call them THEA Thursdays)

  • Co-working space at our office in The Hague

  • In-depth reading groups (on a variety of topics, such as artificial intelligence and biosecurity)

  • Access to a range of career opportunities

  • Speaker events

  • Connections to other EAs in the Netherlands and around the world

  • Travel to EA retreats and conferences

  • 1-1’s with organizers to disucss anything!

Yes, there really are a lot of ways to get better at doing good!

Speak with an Organizer

No matter if you’re new to EA or if you’ve been engaged for years, we’ve found that having a one-on-one chat is one of the ways we can be most helpful to everyone. That’s because we can talk about whatever is most useful for you!

Here’s a few examples of things people have booked in to chat with us about in the past:

  • How can I have a positive impact with my research?

  • There’s some ideas I’m feeling confused about - it’d be great to talk them through.

  • How can I get involved with THEA?

  • I’m feeling unhelpful guilt about not having a big enough positive impact, and I’d like to talk about it with someone that’s had similar feelings.
